Business Development For Law Firms in 2020

Today’s Hot Take is from JDSupra.co,”Business Development in 2020? Let’s Take a Breath,” by Lindsay Griffiths. She writes:

“One of my lawyers emailed me last night and said “what a year this past week has been.” I don’t think truer words have ever been spoken. Lawyers are all in different places at the moment – some firms are exceptionally busy, but may have clients who aren’t able to pay them at the moment. Most of us know we should be doing SOMETHING with our business development, but is it icky? Do we stick with our plans from January? Do we put everything on hold until things calm down?”

She’s on point – there’s a lot of uncertainty, and many folks are just concerned with holding on and surviving. But she does give some excellent advice, and some hope:

“Business development feels strange at the moment, but if you lead with “how can I help?” and look for unique ways to share your services, you’ll be adding value to clients and potential clients in a way that makes everyone feel better.”

“Speak with your clients – talk to them as people and KEEP TRACK OF IT”

Introducing New Tech In A Law Firm..Tell Us How That Went

Today’s Hot Take is from Lawyerist.com, “How to Manage Technology Change in a Law Firm,”
By Jared Correia. This is a regular column by Jared, and in this one he’s answering the question from a frustrated lawyer about introducing new tech at the firm and finding that no one uses it. Basically, it feels like it’s an endless wheel of staff and associates failing to use the tech fixes – so you just go back to what worked.

Jared’s answer is great – just telling folks to do it, is not enough – The “Alpha lawyer” play doesn’t work here…

“When a managing attorney introduces something new into a law firm (often it’s a new technology program, but it doesn’t have to be), there are four stages at which staff should be involved:
(1) vetting; (2) selection; (3) implementation; (4) maintenance. You likely involve your staff in zero of those stages currently.”

He goes in depth on each point, and it is a fantastic read for anyone who has either tried and failed or is looking at the prospect of introducing a new software or system at their law firm.
